I had an opportunity to work on the Litterlotto application. I worked with the project manager of LitterLotto on the app redesign; I navigated stakeholders communication challenges and proposed successful improvements, such as a revamped reward system to enhance user motivation for litter clean-up. This experience honed my design skills and taught me valuable lessons in stakeholders collaboration.
Before I began my research, I started by identifying any problems associated with the current design of the app, looking for gaps in the experience, and comparing it against the usability heuristics. This provided a foundation for improving the overall user experience. The main issues within the application were in the UI design. I identified several problems within the layout- “There are some errors in the app, including a phone number being covered by a box.”
I analysed 3 most popular litter picking apps – looking both at the ordering experience and the negative app store comments to find patterns.
I discovered that most applications in this format include photos or the location where the litter was picked up. The photos are often featured on the homepage as a reminder of what users need to do with the app. They also incorporate elements of playfulness, such as challenges, collecting badges, or bingo cards. This format effectively engages users.
Based on user feedback, the main concern is that the bulk option should be integrated into the camera. This is because ‘real’ litter-picking users won’t have time to take each photo separately.
I and a project manager of LitterLotto, we conducted a survey among real users of the application. I conducted also Conduct Online Interview . In summary, the participants recognised the potential of the Litterlotto app as a great idea but felt that it could benefit from clearer explanations, particularly regarding the coin system and the variety of prizes offered. Improving the user onboarding experience and providing better access to information about rewards could enhance the overall user experience.
There is a growing need for cleaning the environment and the active lifestyle. People are happy to clean up the litter and be rewarded for that. They like to track their walks and litter picked. Survey showed us problems with photos as currently application allows to take photo for each item separately which is the problem for bulk loaded litters. Users are suggesting to take photo of bulks and be rewarded for that.
